Introduction
Female’s hair loss is one of the most common and widespread disorders in women in all the countries across the world. In any country, about 25% of the women population suffers from hair loss at one point or the other. Let us delve further into the most common causes of hair loss in women.
Causes of hair loss in women
The most widespread reasons of hair loss in women are related to passing metabolic changes in the woman’s body at the time of pregnancy, chemotherapy, following a crash diet, hormonal changes, thyroid hormone’s deficiency, severe infection, severe fever and major surgery. Strong medications may also bring their own side effects, hair loss being one of them. Women suffer from thinning and then gradual falling of hair more than men. The hair begins to fall first from the scalp’s crown and the forehead. The hair loss process normally starts from the age of 40, though in some women it may start even earlier. Hair loss is common in women after menopause. As the estrogen levels in women begin to decline, hair loss becomes common. Before the occurrence of menopause, various types of estrogens block the hormones accountable for female hair loss resulting in lower levels of DHT being produced in the follicles and the skin. As a result the hair follicles become weak, resulting in gradual but permanent hair loss. As women attain the age of 80 years, the hair follicles can shrink leading to permanent shedding of hair.
Treatments for hair loss
There are many different treatments for hair loss. It is advisable to consult your doctor before starting any treatment for hair loss. Your doctor may suggest you to follow a particular diet rich in vitamins and iron which are vital for preventing hair loss. Your doctor may also suggest hair replacement surgery to you in which case, artificial hair is stuck surgically to the follicles which have stopped producing hair. Then the color of artificial hair is made to be the same as the color of the natural hair. There are also DHT blockers available in the market. These solutions are made to counteract the gradual decrease in DHT production in the follicle caused due to loss of estrogen. The other solution is the use of medications that are to be taken orally. However many medications come with their own side effects and so it is better to consult your doctor before starting to take any medications. Herbal supplements are a good option as they are side effects free.
